How to Prevent Dry Skin in the Winter Months

How to Prevent Dry Skin in the Winter Months

How to Prevent Dry Skin in the Winter Months

by

It’s dry season, in more ways than one. If you have naturally dry skin, you probably are no stranger to managing flaky, tight skin year-round. But for most of us, our skin gets extra dehydrated once the wind picks up and there’s less humidity in the air. Here are some basic tips for keeping your moisture barrier in check in the fall and winter months.

Skin Soothers

In the dry season, (contingent on where you live) our bodies are constantly in a state of transition from cold to hot environments. If you are entering a heated room from outside in the cold, that transition aggravates the skin and causes redness. Those that struggle with eczema and rosacea may feel these effects more severely than others.

In the dry winter months, moisturizing and reparative products are essential to keeping your skin balanced and under control. These skin-soothing agents will help battle redness and irritation:

Aloe: this ingredient is one of the most widely used herbal remedies for its naturally repairing and moisturizing properties. We use this ingredient in our Invigorating Body Wash, so that when you are taking a hot shower after a long day in the cold, your skin will be cleansed and clarified without stripping the skin of moisture.

Hydrating Face Moisturizer: our Moisturizer combines lightweight, yet moisturizing Macadamia Oil with Vitamins E and C to hydrate, brighten and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Best of all, it tackles that pesky redness and irritation to soothe the skin.

Repairing Eye Stick: the Repairing Eye Stick is a favorite in the winter months because it reduces puffy and dark undereyes with brightening Caffeine, soothing Chamomile, and anti-aging Niacinamide.

Emollient Body Lotion: choose an emollient body lotion in the winter to help soften and soothe the skin instead of tighten it. Bonus points if it contains Aloe, or Macadamia Oil.

Hydration Inside & Out

Life is about balance, and it's important to balance the hydration and moisture you are retaining outside of your body as well as inside.

When our skin gets dry and dehydrated, our moisture barrier is weakened, allowing hydration to escape more quickly and easier out of our dermal layer. The right skincare products will help maintain the moisture barrier and even promote collagen production.

This should go without saying, but staying adequately hydrated through the dry months is essential to keeping your skin in balance and the rest of your body health in check. Try a new large water bottle to keep with you around the house or out at work, or set reminders on your phone to drink more water throughout the day.

Last, use a humidifier. These can be lifesavers in the winter when it’s super dry outside. Humidifiers blow moisture into the air and can help you keep your nasal passages moist to avoid getting sick. It’s also a miracle product for the skin, as it keep the moisture in the air while you sleep or work.

Exfoliation

Exfoliating might seem uncomfortable or unintuitive during such a dry season, but it actually can help you retain moisture. Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells and excess oil, allowing the skin to have a fresh canvas for hydrating agents to penetrate the dermal layer more effectively.

Our Exfoliating Face Scrub is a great choice for the winter as it uses Aloe, a naturally hydrating and repairing ingredient, paired with the gentle exfoliation of Papaya and Apricot Oil to softly refresh the skin.

Bottom Line

The fall and winter months can be some of our least favorite when it comes to skincare because the lack of humidity and cold temperatures just make everything more difficult. But with the help of moisturizing, soothing skincare products and healthy practices, you can ensure that the dryness doesn’t stand a chance against your balanced moisture barrier.
